Hidetoshi Yokoyama, the president of Robot Consulting Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo. President: Hidetoshi Yokoyama. Hereinafter “Robot Consulting”)and Masayoshi Amemiya, director of the Legal Science Research Center, shared their views on the future of policing by AI.

In the dialogue, the participants discussed the possibility of AI taking on the work of police officers in the metaverse, its use in the advanced detection of crime, and the integration of the human-AI interface.

Mr. Amemiya said, in order to treat problems in the metaverse as criminal cases, it is necessary to be familiar with the technology and knowledge required to turn them into evidence, which is currently difficult for real police officers to handle from the standpoint of privacy protection.

In response, Mr. Yokoyama pointed out the need for countermeasures against digital crimes such as metaverse, and said if AI processing power exceeds the speed of human intelligence, it may be possible to control crime itself by predicting and detecting crimes and criminals from databases in advance.

They also debated the possibility that advances in AI technology and the widespread use of the metaverse will increase our dependence on the digital society and, as a result, the AI-human interface may disappear in the future.

They considered that even if AI-based advance detection of crimes and AI police officers in the metaverse are realized in the future, it will be difficult to eradicate AI abuse and crime itself, and discussed the importance of Robot Lawyer who can provide legal advice in the metaverse.
